Psalms 87
Psalms 87:1-7 (NLT)
1 A song. A psalm of the descendants of Korah. On the holy mountain stands the city founded by the LORD.
2 He loves the city of Jerusalem more than any other city in Israel.
3 O city of God, what glorious things are said of you! Interlude
4 I will count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me—also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia. They have all become citizens of Jerusalem!
5 Regarding Jerusalem it will be said, “Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there.” And the Most High will personally bless this city.
6 When the LORD registers the nations, he will say, “They have all become citizens of Jerusalem.” Interlude
7 The people will play flutes and sing, “The source of my life springs from Jerusalem!”
There is significance to citizenship – the rights, provisions, protection, and opportunities that come with rightful placement within the walls of the city. God seems to have great regard for the value of what He establishes as the residence of those He establishes within His city limits. From a geographical location to an eternal entity beyond this life, the city of Zion becomes the New Jerusalem to be occupied as indicated here by not just Jews but people from all parts of the earth. How prophetic this is to the inclusion of Gentiles in adoption into the family and citizenship of God’s design and purpose. God’s passion and desire is for everyone who is born outside the walls to be brought within them in Christ to know the same rights, privileges, and provision as those for whom it was originally formed.
