Psalms 46
Psalms 46:1-11 (NLT)
1 For the choir director: A song of the descendants of Korah, to be sung by soprano voices. God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.
3 Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! Interlude
4 A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High.
5 God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it.
6 The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God’s voice thunders, and the earth melts!
7 The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude
8 Come, see the glorious works of the LORD: See how he brings destruction upon the world.
9 He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear; he burns the shields with fire.
10 “Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.”
11 The LORD of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude
There is a demand of honor being made in the crashing and destruction of the nations bent on conquest, overtaking, and possession through war. Even with the natural movements of quaking and surging, there is a go at claiming hearts with fear and trepidation. In the coming of any and all of Earth’s ominous threats, however, there is a place of escape that is not subject to any devastating maneuvers. We can run with confidence and boldness right into the Lord of All. In Him, there is no vulnerability to the endless launching of earthly threats. This is not something He just provides for us, though. He, Himself, is this safe place. Becoming separate from the inevitable impending dangers requires total immersion in the abode of the Holy One. This is complete acceptance of His standards and His ways. To be safe in Him is to be submitted totally to Him. He is not just a weekend hideout when the forecast is rough. Either He is a continual place of embrace or there is no safety at all. How wonderfully caring the Father is for those who run to Him for safety, but how wisely He imparts the fullness of that care to include the wickedly concealed enticements of the flesh that may be more devastating than that physical threat. Arriving in His refuge is arriving in His Light, where all possibilities of devastation are exposed and annihilated. He is immovable by earthly threats but is also uncompromised by the slightest evil infiltration.
