Psalms 124:1-8 (NLT)
1 A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of David. What if the LORD had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat:
2 What if the LORD had not been on our side when people attacked us?
3 They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger.
4 The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us.
5 Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives.
6 Praise the LORD, who did not let their teeth tear us apart!
7 We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free!
8 Our help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

Whether we are in the midst of difficulties and challenges or experiencing the victories and blessings of God’s faithfulness, it is essential to reflect on where we would be without His goodness in our lives. The adversities that once threatened to keep us bound in chains of oppression and infirmity have been overcome by the One who created heaven and earth.
Through impossible situations, His love has released power that turned what could have been devastating into nothing at all. The failures, rejections, and losses that might have crushed our spirits and stolen both material and spiritual blessings have been subdued through the triumph of Jesus Christ.
In Him, we live, move, and have our being—in the Light and in a living hope that stands far above the terror, fear, and defeat we might have known without Him. Through His faithfulness, we have been sustained, strengthened, and given victory.
I’m so thankful that we can be confident that God’s with us! I loved how the passion translation said the last part of this verse:
“For the same God who made everything, our Creator and our mighty maker, he himself is our helper and defender!”
