Psalms 8
Psalms 8:1-9 (NLT)
1 For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by a stringed instrument. O LORD, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.
2 You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing your enemies and all who oppose you.
3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—
4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?
5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor.
6 You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority—
7 the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals,
8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents.
9 O LORD, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
When God does something, it is to the fullest in a grandiose way. It’s really what He’s known for. When you think of God, if you have any recognition of His work, you think big, impressive, all-encompassing, and mind-blowingly creative. This is His name, His fame, His reputation.
And then, there’s us. Right in the middle of it all, He’s placed such small portions of His grand effect with care and passion set apart from all the rest. In fact, He’s put us in charge of all His handiwork, not to be led or dominated by but to rule over. While we may feel minuscule in the massive scope of what He’s formed, insignificant to affect anything, the Great Creator actually entrusts us with the part we touch. He’s given us His own name and glory to influence wherever we go with the same creative and authoritative impact we’ve received from Him. In the rising to join in the praise so wonderfully led by the innocent with pure and transparent clarity, we are lifted into an identity with His Name beyond just recognizing it. As He is magnified, His very glory and majesty are given a place in us, releasing the nature of power and authority as He’s designed for it to be demonstrated in us. Rather than being disabled in the limited, narrow view of triviality, we can be empowered to influence and impart His glory throughout every part of His world we touch.
